How To Run With a Football

Step-by-step Instructions

Here is what you need to do...
Step 1

At any position its important to know how to carry a football. It doesn't matter if your a lineman or running back, you never know when your chance to carry the ball will happen.

Step 2

When carrying a football keep the ball high and tight to the chest. This means keep the arm that is carrying the ball close to the body. Don't allow the arm to sag and get lazy, this is when fumbles tend to happen. The higher you can keep the ball the better off you are. Defenders will be much less likely to strip the ball from you when running the ball with proper form.

Step 3

When running keep your arms pumping in short and quick motions. This will also protect the ball from any possible defenders from swiping the ball away from you. Don't use long messy arm strides. This would give a defender the opportunity to strip or swipe the ball very easily.

Step 4

Its important to keep the ball away from your defenders. Meaning if your a running back and run to the right sideline, place the ball into your right arm. You can always practice proper carrying techniques at home, or practice. The more you practice using proper technique the more comfortable this will become for you.

Always keep the ball high and tight, its that simple. Switch the ball to the opposite side of the defender when needed. Its very important to practice.
