Russian Twist with Elbows Bent


Differentiation: Mechanics

This variation of a Russian twist is unique. Here is how: you bend your elbows. This arm position limits your ability to cheat by using momentum to move, | (like you might do when performing a Russian Twist with Straight Arms). Preventing cheating enhances the overall effect on your oblique muscles.


Starting Position

To get into starting position, do this...

1) Optionally, it helps to use a partner to perform this exercise, but a partner is not required.

2) Locate an area of the gym with ample floor space to perform the exercise.

3) Place a padded exercise mat on the floor.

4) Sit on the floor - with your knees bent and feet anchored under a bench or any brace, or with a partner holding your feet still.

5) Lean your torso back

6) ...and to create a "V" shape - with your body.

7) Hold both hands at lower chest level.

Main Mechanics

Once in starting position, do this...

1) This is the starting position.

2) Exhale as you gradually twist your torso to the right...

3) Hold this position for a count of one second.

5) Then, repeat the motion, twisting your torso to the left.

Twist by contracting your oblique muscles. Do not turn only your shoulders.
