How To Play Defense In Basketball

Step-by-step Instructions

Here is what you need to do...
Step 1

You need to simply be aware of the person you are guarding and the ball at all times. There is no way you should get beat back on defense if you can see the ball and see your man.

Step 2

We have to improve your quickness. Not speed, I know it's tougher to get faster but being quicker is easy. Anticipate what's going to happen next and do. Practice accelerating and deaccelrating while on the court. Being able to take off at any given time is key. If you get into the motion and practice quickly accelerating your body will become used to this!

Step 3

In order to even accomplish the goal of quickeness, you need to strengthen your thigh muscles. Your thigh flexors are key fro standing, sitting, squatting, jumping and running. With stronger thigh flexors comes more quickness and even speed. Resistance bands has been the only thing I've used to help strengthen the thigh. Use those everyday in your workout and you will see increase.

Funny or interesting story about this topic...

Ever get beat back on defense and the other team scores and it's all your fault? Well you can prevent that from happening by sharpening up your defensive technique and how you play your opponent.

When did you first do this & how did you get started?

The first time the person I was guarding beat me back on defense was devastating. I wasn't in proper position so they were able to leak out get a pass from across court and score. I was ridiculed and had to run sprints because of it. I hated running sprints so I began to work extra hard on defense by trying these things.
