Shoulder Press Using Resistance Bands


Differentiation: Mechanics

This variation of a standing shoulder press is unique. Here is how: you use a double-handle resistance band. The center of the band is anchored under your feet | and simultaneously press using both arms. As you pull the bands farther and make them thinner and longer,| the amount of resistance your shoulders feel increases. This increased resistance adds to the overall definition of your shoulder muscles.


Starting Position

To get into starting position, do this...

1) Obtain elastic exercise bands (the kind with handles).

2) Locate an area of the gym with ample floor space to perform the exercise.

3) Stand straight up.

4) Grasp a handle of the exercise band in each hand.

5) Place your feet in the center of the exercise band. Make sure the band is equal on both your left and right side.

6) Bring your feet close together on the band.

7) Lift the handles upward until they are level with your head.

8) Your palms should face forward.

Main Mechanics

Once in starting position, do this...

1) This is the starting position.

2) Exhale as you push the handles upward as high as possible in a straight line overhead, fully extending your arms...

3) ...until your arms are pointed overhead.

4) This is the ending position.

5) Pause briefly at the top.

6) Then, inhale as you slowly lower the handles to the starting position.

Proper Form

Pay special attention to following proper form by...

Keep your back straight and your head forward.

Keep your elbows parallel with your upper body and do not allow your arms to pivot forward when you lift the handles.
