How To Become A Male Underwear Model
|
Many athletic young guys with well-defined muscles and well-defined abs can become underwear models if they create accurate snapshots and get these snapshots into the hands of the right person at an underwear manufacturer.
Underwear Model Qualifications
To become a male underwear model, you need extremely developed abs, not just a trim waist. You also need well developed thighs and gluts. So, you need to include squats and leg muscle workouts in the gym. Since the middle of the body is the focus for most underwear boxes, defined abdominal muscles and thick quads are just as important to develop as biceps, chest and back muscles.
Getting Started as a Male Underwear Model
A guy can become an underwear model two ways.
1) A modeling agency can submit his photos, or
2) A guy can submit his photos directly to the underwear manufacturer.
The key is to get quality snapshots into the hands of the right underwear modeling decision makers and convince them you will be at the photo shoot if chosen. Campus Men can submit photos for qualified guys after they make a video bio for us.
Becoming an Underwear Model Without a Modeling Agency
Whenever an underwear manufacturer needs a model for new underwear packaging, they usually contact modeling agencies to request for the agency to submit their male models. Underwear modeling jobs are unique because a underwear manufacturer will hire a guy regardless if he is signed with a modeling agency. A young guy who catches the eye of the decision-makers at the underwear manufacturer is just as likely to get selected for a campaign as a model signed with a modeling agency. No underwear manufacturer would turn down the perfect guy if they knew the guy was the "right fit" for their underwear line - simply because the guy was not signed with a modeling agency.
One way a college guy can "get noticed" more than professional models who are part of a modeling agency is to offer a video bio with Campus Men. While male models at agencies only submit snapshots, our featured students are more competitive because they submit snapshots and video bios. Video bios offer an added selling point and allow decision-makers to hear your voice. This allows them to get a hint of who they will be working with.
Easier to Become Underwear Model With Small Underwear Manufacturers
There are several underwear manufacturers around the world, ranging in size from multi-million dollar corporations to small firms who have their offices in the same room as they sew their garments. It might be easier to get noticed by one of the several small underwear manufacturers. You will be paid considerably less if chosen to model for a small underwear brand, but will have the ability to call yourself an "underwear model." Although you are not paid much, you can use the packaging to promote yourself for future modeling jobs and include the packaging in your modeling portfolio.
Conflicts with Future Underwear Modeling Jobs
If you model for a small manufacturer, you will not be able to later pose for a larger underwear manufacturer due to "commercial conflicts." A college guy wants to break into the underwear modeling business, but can only get hired for one underwear line at a time. If he receives another underwear modeling job, he cannot accept it.
A small operation may only pay you a few hundred dollars and use your photo for years. However, if you have a chance to get hired for a modeling job with a major underwear manufacturer that pays $20,000 19 months later, you might not be eligible due to the conflict.
So, a new model needs to assure that the model release he signs limits the time his photos can be published on packaging. If you are only being paid a few hundred dollars by a small underwear line, negotiate so that your photos can only be published for two years. Since they pay so little, it should not cost much for them to hire a different model two years from now.
Faceless Underwear Modeling Jobs Offer Future Flexibility
If you want to get your foot in the door by modeling with a small underwear manufacturer, you can agree to model for a small underwear manufacturer without your face shown in the photographs. By agreeing to faceless photos, you avoid the commercial conflict limitations. Even Calvin Klein displays faceless models on their boxes. Dylan Ricci's style of photography is an excellent example of excellent photography that does not show the identity of the model.
Becoming an Underwear Model Requires Traveling
Equally important is convincing the manufacturer that you are a reliable and professionally acting male model who will show up at their photo shoot - even though you do not have the reputation of a model agent backing you up. Being the best-looking guy in the world means little if you are unable to get to the location of their shoot. A manufacturer knows with certainty that a professional model who was submitted by a modeling agency will show up at their photo shoot. If you do not live in the same city, you may not show up. Equally important is to not make traveling a hassle. An underwear manufacturer does not want to speak with your parents, or have to wait until you ask off work from your job.
Your First Step: Have Campus Men Submit You to Underwear Manufacturers
We can submit our featured students to underwear manufacturers so they can be considered to become a Male Underwear Model. (We only submit featured students who have a qualified body.) A featured student is a college student who has established a promotional page on CampusMen.com by creating a short video bio,
After you create a video bio, we will evaluate the photos you send us, request additional photos if needed and then submit them to the manufacturer.
The value Campus men offers is as a source for marketing advice and your video bio and promotional page are effective promotional tools. Campus Men gives guidance to its featured students on how to best to present themselves for consideration by underwear manufacturers, but are independent of them. It is not unusual for our staff to ask for reshoots of snapshots before we feel comfortable submitting a featured student to an underwear line. College guys often apply to modeling jobs using vague photos that do not allow decision-makers to get an accurate idea of what the student looks like or his size. We submit these snapshots, along with your video bio to underwear lines.
The video bio goes a long way in "selling you." While your competition may be sending random snapshots into an email message that may or may not make it to decision-makers, you will have a video bio and promotional page on our site to "sell" you to underwear manufacturers.
To work with us, read your first step on how to become a featured student. Featured students are required to create a short, 3-5 minute video bio. There is no cost involved.
Types of Underwear Poses to Submit
After you have established a Campus Men promotional page with your video bio, follow these instructions for how to create male modeling audition photos and which poses to capture.
The key to being noticed is to submit snapshots that show the type of male body the creative director or casting director is looking for. Be sure to submit photos when these body parts are at their peak condition.
In the eyes of a decision-maker, you are only as good as your worst image. Choose one snapshot that is most flattering toward your face.
For the rest, shoot closer-up photos that show your body from the shoulders to above the knees. Shoot straight on pics and several images that show your body from the side.
Underwear Style: Tighty-Wighties or Boxers?
Some underwear designers tend to market "briefs" or "tighty whitey" style underwear and bikini briefs. Other underwear lines aim toward boxers or boxer briefs. Look at the manufacturer's current line of offerings. If they sell a lot of briefs, wear briefs in your audition pics.
Underwear Packaging Show Sexy or Clean-cut Poses?
Some underwear manufacturers have sexually-charged packaging. These photos would make your grandmother blush. Their packaging sells "sex" more than the usefulness of their underwear. For example, the slogan for Wax Brand is "put a little fire in your pants" and recently ran an ad campaign featuring Landon Lueck of The Real World: Philly that hints at bisexuality.

Wax Brand ad campaign featuring Landon Lueck of The Real World: Philly, hints at a Guy-Girl-Guy threesome. Note the bulge in underwear, emphasizing penis size.
Some underwear manufacturers are looking for male models with large penises. If the underwear manufacturer has a "sexy" approach to their marketing, your crotch size will be important. Is the ridge of the head of the model's penis visible through the fabric in the manufacturer's box cover? If so, the model's johnson is likely partially erect. If this is the case, you may be well advised to sure to make sure your penis is slightly, not fully plumped up before shooting your audition photos for one of the more "sexy" lines. If this is not for you, make sure you target more conservative underwear lines. Fruit of the Loom and Hanes are not going to be interested in big bulges in tighty-whiteys. However, a sexier underwear line will be interested in the size of male model's penis.

Underwear Model Contests
Also be on the lookout for model search contests sponsored by underwear companies as a way to break into underwear modeling. Yes, they receive a ton of applicants, but not all are qualified for modeling. Guys have landed great opportunities by taking a chance that they didn't think would result in anything positive. Male Models have won Wet Underwear Contests While On-Location for photo shoots and Campus Men's Male Models Won a Wet Underwear Contest for a second time.
