A good photographer can make an ordinary or gritty location look attractive in photos. This often means models will pose in less than glamourous locations.

You look good in the resulting photos, but do not expect your photo shoot to be glamorous.

Fooling the viewer by making everyday or crappy locations look exotic is pretty common. Although the background may look like a fantasy locale in the photo, the photo shoot might ironically have occurred in a parking lot or simply against a wall.

Photo Next to Dumpster and Broken Glass

One story about a photo created for a local sports magazine illustrates how good photos can be made in dirty or unglamorous surroundings. The now defunct "Scarlet & Gray Illustrated Magazine" hired a photographer to photograph their annual swimsuit edition.

He photographed 10 girls at beaches or pools. One girl arrived at the photographer's house and said she could not stay long because she needed to depart for spring break. Since the drive to the beach took a long time, the photographer simply held her photo shoot in a parking lot behind his house!

The photographer made a backdrop, using metallic mylar and a cardboard sheet painted pink and black. The model knelt on her knees on a white sheet atop pillows. Concrete pavement, broken glass, trash, and parked were cars outside the view of the camera lens.

Her facial expressions conveyed disgust while posing because she thought her photo would suck. The model asked repeatedly if the photo "looked any good" during the photo shoot.

When our photographer developed the film, most of the photos on two rolls of film were unusable because of the model's poor facial expressions. But, a few photos were phenomenal. A photo from this session was chosen for the cover of the magazine. The model admitted days later that she assumed the photos would end up being poor quality at the time of the photo shoot because she was posing in a parking lot.

"She needed to go with the flow and trust that the location did not matter," our photographer said.

Poor Surroundings

Here are more examples of good photos that were created in unglamorous settings:

Photo at Abandoned Auto Plant

Our photographer found an optimum location for photo shoots at the abandoned Columbus Auto Parts plant. The closed factory was littered with rusted metal, dilapidated buildings and lots of gritty surroundings that lent character and color to photos. The site provided privacy and male models felt comfortable posing nude because no others were present. Four male models were photographed there and incredible photos were captured.

Disgusting Water Fall

O'Shaunnesy Dam and the dirty waters of the Scioto River were chosen for photographs of brothers Malcom MacLaren and Steve MacLaren.

"There was this brown foamy raw sewage floating on the water and accumulated on rocks male models were posing on," our photographer said. "The models kept sliding off the rocks."

Feces Filled Chicken Coops

With the scent of chicken shit flowing through the air, a male model was photographed at a chicken coop. The chicken coops were Quonset huts that had all their paint peeling. The peeling paint gave an artistic look as a backdrop.

"People who saw the finished photos assumed they were photographed in an exotic locale," our photographer said.

Miniature Golf Course

Model in waterfall

One of Mark Grogg's modeling photos was taken at a man-made waterfall at a miniature golf course inside "Fantasy Golf Fun Center" beside a highway. Mark simply stood in the flowing water while golfers layed beside him. The games and golf holes are simply not visible through the camera lens. The resulting photos looked like they were taken at an exotic waterfall.
