How To Score in Football

Step-by-step Instructions

Here is what you need to do...
Step 1

In football you can score in multiple ways touchdowns, field goals, extra points, safety, or a defensive touchdown.

Step 2

To score a touchdown the offense must reach the opposing teams end zone. Touchdowns are worth 6 points. At the end of each touchdown the team is given the option to kick the ball through the goal posts are try and score again. Kicking the ball through the goal posts is called an extra point and counts as 1 point. The ball is always kicked at the 5 yard line for extra point attempts. If the team decides to pass or run the ball it results in 2 points. Keep in mind if the team doesn't decide to kick and runs a play and doesn't reach the end zone, no points are given. The play also starts at the 5 yard line.

Step 3

Field goals happen when a team kicks the ball through the goal posts. Field goals are worth 3 points. Field goals are not the same thing as extra points. Field goals are kicked to score points, they do not happen after a touchdown.

Step 4

A safety occurs when an offensive player is tackled in their own end zone. The opposing team receives to points for accomplishing that task.

Step 5

Defenses can score touchdowns on either interceptions or fumbles returned to the opposing end zone. These are worth 6 points.
