How to Select the Right Swiss Ball Size for You

Step-by-step Instructions

Here is what you need to do...
Step 1

For all kinds of exercises, from core to preprioceptive, Swiss Balls are extremely useful pieces of fitness equipment. However, since they are able to be used for such a myriad of exercises, picking the right sized ball for each exercise is important. This is where I come in. I'll explain the differences between each size ball - all of which you can get from the link below. Read on and get your Swiss on.

Step 2

Consider capacity: Most swiss balls are "anti-burst". However, choose a swiss ball that can hold ample weight. Many are rated as being able to hold 2000 pounds.

Step 3

Buy a swiss ball that includes a pump for inflating the ball.

Step 4

Some models come with an instruction manual or give extra tips for training.

Step 5

Some models include a warranty. Consider the length of the warranty and if there are any fees associated with getting the item repaired or replaced.

Step 6

Most swiss balls have non-slip surfaces.

Step 7

If there is a difference in material, it is not very apparent. So, we will discuss how to select a ball by size, not material or construction. Ball size depends on the height of user. So, size yourself up, and figure out if any of these balls are a good fit for you.

Step 8

45cm Ball- This ball is great for doing exercises that involve clutching a ball between your hands or feet. A 45 cm ball is also good for people who are shorter than average, as it allows you to keep your feet on the ground and your body stable during situps and other Swiss Ball exercises.

Step 9

65cm Ball- This ball is for average height folks, and it's great to use for exercises that involve a high angle and a lack of perfect positioning. All in all, if you're around 5'5 or taller, this is the ball for you.

Step 10

85cm Ball- This ball is for the tall people. A ball this height will require long legs, and if not, will promote an unstable surface which is sometimes good for certain preprioceptive exercises. Furthermore, this size ball is best for stretching, because you can splay your entire body over it without worrying about hitting the ground with your head, hands, or even feet (if you so desire). Tall people and people who like to stretch- this is the ball for you.

Step 11

There are also sizes in between these sizes. All in all, the 2000 Pounds Static Strength Exercise Stability Ball with Pump by Black Mountain offers sizes in 45, 55, 65, 75, and 85cm. The sizes are applicable mainly to your personal height, and these balls are built to last any amount of reasonable weight. 2000 pounds is pretty hard to reach as a human being, and popping these balls isn't very easy to do. They come with a pump that makes filling and re-filling them no problem at all.

Special Attention

Difficulties people often experience or parts that need special attention to do it right.

Choosing the right ball all comes down to personal height. If you're 5'0" or below, the smallest ball is perfect for you; if you're 6'0" or above, grabbing the largest ball is probably in your best interest. Aside from that, all the sizes simply come down to personal preference. So grab one ASAP and enjoy

Funny or interesting story about this topic...

My father is far taller than me. One day, at the gym I used to go to, there were only three Swiss Balls left. All three were tiny, and, like I said, my dad is pretty tall. The smaller Swiss Balls weren't too difficult for me to manage my height around, but for my dad it was a ridiculous exercise in futility. He was like a giraffe balancing his length on a child's kickball. After that, we both learned that choosing the right sized Swiss Ball is far more important than we ever realized.

When did you first do this & how did you get started?

I started figuring out the right Swiss Ball size for myself when I got into college. It's usually so overcrowded in the gym that I don't have a chance to get the right ball for myself. Instead, I come home to a trusty Swiss Ball that I'm positive is just the right size for my person. It's nice, and I'm sure you'll find it nice as well. So go out and get yourself a Swiss Ball.
