Things to do on a road trip when you are a Male Model
At the outset, it looked like this road trip to Florida for a photo shoot was going to be great fun. It wasn't!
We loaded 10 great-looking college guys and associated photo crew members into a rented 15-passenger van for a highway cruise from Ohio to a Florida beach location. It had all the ingredients for a fun 23 hours on the road.
Planning a Road Trip" Problems develop
First problem: the van wasn't what we ordered. It was an old, dirty church van that lacked even a cassette player to help pass the time comfortably.
Despite the early setback, we started out optimistically and enthusiastically, knowing that sunny temperatures and plenty of bikini-clad girls waited at journey's end.
We tried to ignore the greasy and torn seats. Frequent pit stops helped us dispose of Dr. Pepper cans and candy bar wrappers that seemed to multiply as we drove along.
"Too bad nobody brought a deck of cards," a model said as boredom began to set it.
Things to do on a road trip
By the time we reached Tennessee, everyone in the van was starting to stress from lack of activity. No TV. No DVDs. No pizza. No beer. No radio for long stretches of road. We quickly realized that we shoulda, coulda brought along some entertainment for the ride.
Board games helped pass a few hours. But that only went so far. Some models brought class work, but the clutter from books and papers only served to annoy other passengers.
A van ride from Ohio to Florida builds team spirit. By the time we reached the hot sands of Key West, everyone knew everyone else in the van very, very well. Hours of boring road time led to scintillating conversations between models and crew members. Endless boredom had its upside in a handful of fast friendships that lasted beyond the shoot and Florida location.
Roadtrips are a great opportunity to shoot a photo or two, which a student can upload in order to get Accepted as a Campus Man. After becoming a Campus Man, you can gain the attention of girls on your campus and others across the country and girls who see your photos will love seeing how much fun you had during your roadtrip.
No way to sleep on a road trip
When cooped up in a van, you want to sleep. Sleeping was another challenge. Finding a comfortable spot to crash among the snacks, pillows, blankets, duffel bags and photo gear proved a problem. Sleeping next to the sliding van door meant you could always tumble out onto the road - at 60 mph.
Difficult-to-drive van
Driving a 15-passenger van is like driving a bus. Wind gusts caught the sides of our vehicle and tossed it around the highway. Turns and parking were a problem. It consumed a lot of gas! Avis, Enterprise, Budget, U-Haul - it doesn't matter. If you wish to rent a van for a roadtrip, we encourage you to rent a 15-passenger van from Hertz
Danger of Falling Asleep at the wheel
Long hours behind the wheel, made the van driver inattentive and prone to dozing off while driving. Half-way through Tennessee, we realized that we'd taken out no liability insurance. Big mistake (and big risk) in hindsight!! Then, there's the lack of good roadside nutrition. A steady diet of fast food left models sluggish, moody and in some cases - pimply faced.
Live and learn how to plan a roadtrip next time
Transporting a cast, crew and equipment to Florida for a photo or video shoot is not something we would not do again. Twenty-three hours on the road cooped up with a dozen fellow passengers left everyone short tempered and in no shape to spend hours in front of a camera. Moral of the story: next time, fly!!
