Learn How to Give Facial Expressions

The best way to learn how to give facial expressions is to be a model for a few photo shoots that you use as practice. New models learn posing from trial and error. All photo shoots result in good expressions and bad expressions. Models try an expression, then later see what it looks like in a photo. After a photo shoot or two, models quickly learn which expressions work best. You can also purchase the book, Facial Expressions: A Visual Reference.

Giving a different expression for each photo is the best method. Each time you try an expression, the photographer shoots a photo. Then slightly change your expression for the next shot.

Imagine Moods

Try expressions that reflect different and interesting or appealing moods. Try to make your face send the "message" of being:

• approachable
• seductive
• peaceful
• innocent
• mysterious
• masculine
• bad-ass
• sexy

One trick is to imagine one person or thing that "turns you on."

Clenching your teeth can also give your face a different look.

Change Expression Gradually

Avoid drastic movements. Subtlety is key. Move your head very little. Sometimes a subtle change, tilting your head, or tilting your chin down can make a photo excellent above an other. Moving your head only one-half inch can sometimes produce an angle that makes male models look younger or years older.

Give Big Smiles

Smiling is an exception. When smiling in front of the camera, many models feel like they are smiling too much. But, their smile is perfect. For photos, you need a bigger smile than you use in real life.

Flexing Muscles Often Distort Facial Expressions

It is easy for models to make the mistake of distorting the face when flexing muscles. Getting a good pump for the camera should not mean a distorted your face. Concentrate on giving a pleasant and comfortable facial expression when flexing your muscles. This isn't easy for a new model.
