Male Models Overcome Dehydration, Cramps, Insects and Rough Waves

Surprisingly some models have endured physically demanding poses or rough conditions during photo shoots.

Extreme Heat at Shoots

The most common discomfort for models outdoors is heat. Like here, where girls are inside a restaurant at John's Pass to escape heat at a shoot outside.

Models can also become dehydrated in the hot sun.

These guys are trying their best to deal with the extreme humidity at Bahia Honda State Park during a long photo shoot.

When a crew uses a van to get to shoots, it can get incredibly hot inside the van.

Models' Bare Feet

Bare feet at a shoot can be a common hazard. This model is walking barefoot on rough wooden planks leading to Turtle Key.

Blazing hot sand on your feet can be a rough condition at beaches. Like Chris here, who is feeling the pain from walking on hot sand.

This model had to catch a ride on the back of another model to avoid getting his feet cut by sharp rocks on this Miami shoreline.

Male Model Hit in the Balls

This same model got smacked in the balls by a huge wave while posing in the ocean.

Lack of Food

Some male models do not eat food three hours prior to their photo shoot to make their muscle appear more defined. Models also deplete water from their bodies through cardio exercise. A few male models collapsed from not eating all day and intense heat while posing on Key West's Smathers Beach. Brent and Brian suffered heat exhaustion and became unable to continue.

Models can also become exhausted from flexing muscles.

The sun can also drain the energy from models.

These models had to swim out to this floating pier to pose for their shoot.

Cramping from holding a pose for hours

For some photo shoots, models move a lot -- choosing poses on their own. For others, the photographer directs the model how to exactly position his body.

Some models hold still for long periods. One model held motionless for more than four hours! Splattered head to toe with fluorescent paint, Mark lay still on a concrete floor of a studio until his photo shoot was finished. He could not move his position because the paint strokes on his body had to match the paint strokes on the floor beneath him.

When sun slid behind clouds during his shoot, this model stayed in position, and waited three hours for the sun to reappear. His knees and ankles became sore from kneeling on hard wooden planks.

Raw Sewage

O'Shaunnesy Dam and the dirty waters of the Scioto River were chosen for photographs of Malcom and Steve.

"There was this brown foamy raw sewage floating on the water and accumulating on rocks models were posing on," Sean said. "The models slid right off."

Insects and Models

Wearing fragrances can be asking for trouble. Kristin was bitten by so many insects during a Sarasota, Florida shoot that she became unable to model for three days.

While she posed on her knees in sand for a shoot, Kelly was attacked and bitten by red army ants.
