What is a Spokesmodel?

A Campus Men Spokesmodel is a male college student who is knowledgeable about strength training and appears in informative “Exercise Videos”, following pre-written scripts.

Here is what is different with our program: You do not actually perform the exercise movement in our videos. We use illustrations for that. We need you to speak dialogue that introduces animations and also ends each video.

Are You Qualified?

You are qualified if...

You are a college student who is very knowledgeable about weightlifting.

You can memorize scripted dialogue. (we provide)

You live in the US or Canada.

You are physically-fit.

You do not need to be a certified Personal Trainer.

You live within driving distance of one of the 15 campuses we will visit.*

How Our Production Works

Our exercise database contains more than 600 exercises, covering 12 muscle groups.

Upon acceptance in the program, we will assign you a batch of 40-70 exercises that cover a single muscle group. We will ship to you clothing that displays the Campus Men logo, a tripod (a stand) for your phone, along with a written "script" for each exercise in your batch.

Each script is quite short and contains only 20 seconds of dialogue to be spoken on camera for that exercise. The clips appear before and after animations that illustrate how to perform the exercise.

Phase One

Our first phase involves amateur-quality video clips. During phase 1, you will film two 10-second video clips for each exercise. You film these short clips on your own, from your home, with our guidance. The dialogue discusses 1) what makes the exercise different from others and 2) ways some people do the exercise incorrectly.

Remember, you will not perform any exercise. We use animations for that!

An example of a script is below.

The below clips are for the exercise, “Reverse Grip Machine Lat Pulldown” and is one of 67 scripts that will be filmed by the SpokesModel who will be assigned all Back exercises.

Clip Dialogue Word Count
Clip A (Intro) “We are going to show you how to do a Reverse Grip Machine Lat Pulldown properly.” 16
Pause Separate the clips with a 2-second pause between clips
Clip B (Differentiation) “This variation of a Pulldown differs from other pulldowns in that it employs the biceps as well as the outer-lats in a machine setting in order to maximize weightload and effectiveness.” 54

The clips you film on your own should be simple. Film these in a well-lit room indoors or a quiet area outdoors. You should be able to finish all clips in a single afternoon. Elaborate, or complex clips are not desired and you should use the same format and location for each excercise. (Do not make footage for each exercise unique. This is not wanted and will cause delays.) You can film these in your backyard, in your driveway or against a plain wall in your home. Do not film in a gym. Do not select scenic backgrounds. A plain wall will do fine! We want to see you, not things behind you.

No other person can appear in this footage. Do not wear any clothing that displays logos. You should not post this footage on youtube or any other website.

Phase Two

Once you have made the all clips for your batch of exercises, (a total of approx. 20 minutes of footage) we move onto Phase 2. You bring the footage you filmed on your own with you to the professional shoot.

Phase 2 involves professional-quality video footage of you that we film with our cameras. You speak during this footage, but we do the filming. We invite you to our shoot, where a series of short video clips are created. These are "modular" clips that are included in multiple exercise videos. We, you might film a five-second clip of you one time, but use it in 12 exercise videos.

At the professional shoot, you will sign a model release and receive a check for appearing in the phase 1 and phase 2 footage. Please note you do not receive payment for the phase 1 clips until you show up for the phase 2 shoot. We do not use any footage until you receive payment from us.

After your shoot, we edit all the clips together, along with animations of the actual exerise movement to create superior quality exercise videos.

More Details!

  • Our Process

When we create a professional video, there is a lot more preparation than you may be accustomed to when shooting your own videos with your phone! Preparing for a professional video shoot involves planning and memorizing, not just an ability to move. We don't just show up and press the record button.

This is because video editing time is costly. The more organized a shoot, the less "takes," mistakes, starts and stops will be needed. Less time will be needed in the editing studio.

Plus, with pre-planning, we can edit and publish your videos faster. Being organized also makes the resulting video shorter and more watchable.

    Planning is Key to Quality

Shoots are pre-planned weeks before you meet us at the shoot. Although the topic of your videos may involve something you have done a million times, you do not step in front of the camera without a written version of the topic that will be filmed on video.

We pre-plan close-up shots and camera angles.

We Film Multiple Exercises Per Spokesmodel/Per Shoot

It takes time to set up cameras, microphones and lights. Locations must be secured. We need to complete a minimum number of videos each time equipment is unloaded and set-up.

  • Payment Rates

Videos are created in two parts. Some parts you film on your own and some parts are filmed by us. You will be paid after both parts are finished.

  • You will not demonstrate exercises

Actual mechanics of the exercise is shown through animations and a voiceover (audio track).

Your speaking parts will be performed in front of a wall - not in a gym.

  • Filming Location

Your speaking parts will not be filmed in a gym. Phase two speaking parts will be performed in front of a wall/plain backdrop. You have flexibility as to where you film some Phase One clips and can choose to add your own personal style, provided background noise is limited and no other person appears in the background. This is why we have you film Phase One clips on your own.
