WHS grad is Mr. July in 1991 Calendar of OSU men

Wadsworth - Next July, when Ohio State Coeds flip their 1991 Campus Men® of the Scarlet and Gray Calendar to July, they'll find a pensive Mr. July, Tom Gairing of Wadsworth. He's lying on the rocks at Put in Bay, having climbed up from Lake Eries' surf.

But they won't find Tom on the campus. He will have graduated, either in March or June.

The son of Walter and Betty Gairing of Woodland Avenue, Tom is a senior at OSU, majoring in real estate and finance, and no, he hasn't other ambitions at modeling. His fraternity brothers suggested he try out for the calendar. He was one of 500 students who did so.

He says he did it for the fun and the traveling. Most of the 16 photos in the calendar were taken on a week's trip to St. Petersburg, Fla. last summer. Each of models had to pay $340 to participate, but they received copies of the calendars at a wholesale price. So they can get their money back and more, when they sell them on campus at the retail price of $7.95. In this area, the calendars are available at Waldenbooks at Rolling Acres Mall.

Sean Ashbrook, 23, and student publisher of the calendar, said, "This is our most successful calendar yet. We've sold more during our first week out than we usually do during our first month." He doubled production of the men's calendar and also a companion one, Campus Women of the Scarlet & Gray, to 10,000 each this year.

Ohio State University has no connection with the calendars. In fact, in the past it claimed the calendars infringed on the OSU trademark, and tried to block their publication. This year, according to an article in the Columbus Dispatch, "The university has no position on the calendars," said spokeswoman Ruth Gerstner, "They're not ours."
