Hot College Guys
Our only nighttime shot was in front of an audience of about 100, at the world famous "Sloppy Joe's Bar," Hemingway's old hangout. The shoot was plagued by rain, equipment failure, drunks on the street and a little drinking on our group's part. The close proximity to Sloppy Joe's was a bit too tempting for some of our models on the set who went in for some of the bar's famous drinks. If you haven't experienced a "Rum Runner" at Sloppy Joe's, you are missing out!
After the shootings were completed, the Campus Men made it a point to try to visit every bar on the island. ...and there are more than you would think. To name them would infringe on the Fairness Doctrine. Let's just say the models visited the bank machine many times. We do remember going to Coconuts Comedy Club at the invitation of Key West's George Murphy.
We had to apologize to the guys at Fury Catamarans because more than half of our models couldn't get out of bed after a heavy night of partying to go snorkeling on the ocean. Even at 11 a.m., Matt found where they stored the free beer on the boat.
We sent tremors through the Key West community when Rob Light won the "Wet Jockey Shorts" contest at "The Copa" hands down. Andy came in an aggressive second place. Rob Walker said he would never enter the "Best Chest" contest at Rick's. Still, it was fun helping him spend his prize money the next day!
Still, there's just one thing that all the partying, fun times and excitement which come with photographing a calendar on a beautiful island just can't compare to: Relaxing on the beach at sunset with a calendar boy, talking quietly about basically nothing, and letting time just slip by as the sun hides its head for another night's rest. Too soon enough you realize you must leave paradise, but until then, you savor what moments you have.
There once was a time, never far from my mind, on the beach, on the Fourth of July, I remember the sand, how you held out your hand, and we touched for what seemed - a lifetime... If you want to see for yourself, the Campus Men plan to return to Key West over New Year's, December 27 through January 3, 1993. Watch out in June of 1993, when next year's 1994 "Campus Men" calendar will be photographed in the Conch Republic. Until then, enjoy the 1993 "Campus Men in Key West" calendar!
