Facebook and Myspace Privacy
All those guys and girls who add private photos and info to their myspace page don't consider that strangers are looking at that stuff. Ever noticed when someone has a blank profile with only "Tom" as their friend? This is likely because they registered so they view someone else's photos. Do yourself a favor: make your myspace page private today. Does your Myspace page really need to be public?
Facebook is not as risky, but the same precautions apply.
Even making your Myspace page private isn't 100 percent fullproof. We have heard stories of students using their roommate's Myspace account to view private profiles.
Comments Posted by Friends on Myspace and Facebook
Are friends leaving comments on your page that mention where you work or very specific information that can help strangers find you? Your friends who post comments on your myspace page may be unwittingly giving details about your life to strangers. Instead of sending you an email or text message, they post comments on your page.
When I told my friend Dave at UCLA about not having time to log into Myspace to read comments, and complained that friends should just email or text me, Dave said girls post comments on a guy's Myspace page because they want others who come to his page to read what she wrote. She wants others to think she has a fun life. Posting comments is fun, but everyone in the world can read these comments if your Myspace profile is public.
Specific Details
So, don't give out private info on the internet. Don't give out info that can be used to indirectly locate private info about you. Think it through.
Saying that you have 15-inch biceps is harmless. Describing your abs routine is harmless. Saying that your dad owns a lumber yard in a small town in Alabama is way too specific. (It doesn't take too much effort to locate the last name of an owner of a business.)
Photos on Myspace and Facebook
Are those photos on myspace for your friends or for possible modeling professionals? To keep up with trends in photography, Campus Men is in a Yahoo mailing list whose members email photos to other members. One male member poses as a hot female on various websites to obtain private photos of straight guys. He then forwards those photos to thousands of members of the mailing list. So, that hot chick you email your private photo to - may not be a female after all.
