Campus Men spends a lot of time teaching college guys who want to model the importance of being available to accept modeling and acting jobs. Being available can pertain to time and schedule, as well as assuring your girlfriend or parents are not an impediment to "being available."

However, once a college guy relocates to a large city like Los Angeles, to pursue acting or modeling full time, the issue of getting off work takes on a heightened level of importance. Becoming a full-time actor or model involves being hired for more than an occasional role or modeling job every month or two to impress girls at a night club. Getting hired for modeling jobs through an agency requires regularly attending auditions and requires he needs to have a day job that allows him to attend auditions.

Not Enough Income at First

We recently signed Kyle from Canada who has been building his body for a year, hates his job and wants to get himself on the pages of a fitness magazine. However, the income Kyle could make in modeling will be much less in the beginning of his fitness modeling career than the amount he earns at his present job – the job he hates. So, someone like Kyle who moves to a large city to become an actor or male model needs to find a "day job" that is the right fit.

Frequently Need Off Work for Auditions

Put simply, actors and models are constantly being rejected. This means they need to attend many auditions before they get hired for a role or modeling job. So, a guy needs to be able to get to the audition without a lot of hassle. If his boss has a shit-fit about an actor getting off work to attend one audition, it will be impossible for that guy to be successful, because he must constantly go on auditions to get roles.

Finding a good job in Los Angeles is not easy, but possible, but employers at Staples, insurance agencies, warehouses, etc. avoid hiring actors because actors frequently want to leave work. Bosses at jobs tell young guys who want to act or model "You don't seem committed to working here." No shit. The young guy wants to become an actor, not develop a lifelong career at Staples in Los Angeles.

Examples of Day Jobs Actors Choose

So, it is naturally very tricky to find an income source if you want to act. Actors find many different solutions that work for them. Some become self employed, or teach independent acting classes to people like you, some become fitness trainers, some become real estate agents.

Easiest Jobs for Actors Are Taken

The jobs that come to mind first, bartender, waiter, and fitness trainer are filled in Los Angeles. Every actor wants those jobs. So, don't assume you are going to get a bartending job as soon as you exit the highway and enter the city limits of Los Angeles. . It is a fact that the jobs that are easy to get in your hometown may be very difficult to obtain in a big city. Even if you have five years managing the most popular bar at your University, you must start off as a bar back or doorman at a bar in Los Angeles.

Actors Choose Alternative Income Sources

Actors don't really need regular employment for their "day job" they just need money to pay their bills during the time between starting out and becoming successful enough to receive residual checks and enough income to pay their bills solely from modeling or acting.

Campus Men does not offer easy answers to aspiring actors and models on which day jobs to choose. We only encourage you to decide a strategy of how you will pay your bills if you move to a big city, and realize a regular job that doesn't allow getting off work easily and with one day's notice or less does not mix well with an acting or modeling career.

Comment from a reader...

Writer states only the obvious, leaving readers with no insight or direction for future plans. Lack of research for this project is evident. Had the writer took the project head on a potential actor would be aware of "day jobs" available to them which are often overlooked. These would include: substitute teaching, housekeepers, telemarketing, crew work, ect... I would hope that in the future writers would not only state the obvious, but do the research to help their audience.

Thanks for your comment. Valid points. The purpose of this article is to explain to college-age males who want to act that they will not be able to pay their bills solely on their acting income. They need a day job. Many college guys who visit CampusMen.com who want to become actors do not consider the financial side of the career. They assume they will arrive in a city and start making money right away. However, the job of an actor is not the same as a typical job that pays a bi-weekly paycheck.

Also, we run into numerous young guys who arrive in Los Angeles, obtain a job that allows them to make ends meet, but are prevented from going on auditions or taking roles because they cannot get off work.
